Alyssa’s Reviews – Holiday Reading: Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle

Hey guys!

Today I’m going to be reviewing one of my favourite holiday books! Let it Snow is a collection of holiday/winter themed short stories, that in one way or another, all connect.

Summary (made by GoodReads.com):

Sparkling white snowdrifts, beautiful presents wrapped in ribbons, and multicolored lights glittering in the night through the falling snow. A Christmas Eve snowstorm transforms one small town into a romantic haven, the kind you see only in movies. Well, kinda. After all, a cold and wet hike from a stranded train through the middle of nowhere would not normally end with a delicious kiss from a charming stranger. And no one would think that a trip to the Waffle House through four feet of snow would lead to love with an old friend. Or that the way back to true love begins with a painfully early morning shift at Starbucks. Thanks to three of today’s bestselling teen authors—John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle—the magic of the holidays shines on these hilarious and charming interconnected tales of love, romance, and breathtaking kisses.

“Tender without being mushy, these carefully crafted stories of believable teen love will leave readers warm inside for the holidays.”—School Library Journal

“Contemporary culture, humorous romantic developments and strong characters enhance this collaborative effort.”—Kirkus Reviews

Thoughts:

I don’t really know how to review this book, so I’m going to list my thoughts!

  1. I loved how all of the stories came together.
  2. I feel like the authors came together and worked hard on this book.
  3. The stories do not retell each other, they just simply feed off of one another.
  4. The beginnings were a bit slow, but quickly redeemed them selves.
  5. I would defitinitey re-read this book again!

I would highly recommend this book! I gave it 4.80/5 stars!

Holiday Reading: Quick Thought #4: How do I make time to read during the holidays/winter break?

Hey guys!

Today I’m going to be doing my Quick Thought #4!

How do I make time to read during the holidays/winter break?

I love to make a TBR/Schedule of what I’m going to be reading right before Winter Break. I always have a few books/genres that I need to complete for school, so I base my TBR around that as well.

Another tip would be to go to the library as much as possible. I always love being in an atmosphere with books, so if you need to study, you can still pick up a book and start reading!

For students in Elementary or Middle School, try to pick 3 books and chose the chapters you will read each day, so you can finish your desired books!

Another idea would be to make goals/challenges that will make you read more. For me, whenever I make a goal I try my best to stick to it! That way I get whatever I need to get done, over with!

I hope you make some time to read during Winter Break!

Holiday Reading: DIY Holiday Themed Book Marks

Hi guys!

Today, I’m going to be showing you how to make 3 DIY holiday themed bookmarks!

You’ll need:
IMG_2167.JPG
Scissors

IMG_2164.JPG
Tape

IMG_2166.JPG
A Pen (any colour)

IMG_2163.JPG
Any Colored Construction Paper

Before you start, you’ll want to cut your construction paper into 1-1 1/2 inch strips, these will be the base of your bookmark.

IMG_2168.JPG

The first bookmark I will show you how to make is the CandyCane!

IMG_2180.JPG

First of all, you will need either a white bookmark and a red bookmark, or a pink bookmark and a cream bookmark.

IMG_2170.JPG

First, you will need to create diagonal dashes on your pink or red bookmark, this is where you will cut your stripes to make the pink/red part of the candycane.

IMG_2172.JPG

Next, you will need to cut these diagonal lines, to make small strips of paper.

IMG_2173.JPG

Then, you will need to organize on your cream/white colored bookmark, where you will put the stripes on your book to make the candycane.

IMG_2174.JPG

After this, tape your stripes neatly onto the base of the bookmark.

IMG_2176.JPG

IMG_2178.JPG

As you can see, the sides will be uneven, so neatly trim them off.

IMG_2179.JPG

Lastly, decorate your candy cane! I put “Happy Holidays!” on the cream parts!

IMG_2180.JPG
Now you’re all done with the first bookmark!

Next, we are going to make the Let it Snow Bookmark!

IMG_2187.JPG

To make this, you are going to need Blue and White/Cream colored bookmarks.

IMG_2182.JPG

First you will need to draw different size circles on the white/cream book mark.

IMG_2184.JPG

Next, you will need to cut out the circles from the cream/white bookmark.

IMG_2185.JPG

Lastly, place the circles on the tops and bottoms of the book mark and write the saying “Let it Snow” on the bookmark! Now you’re done!

IMG_2187.JPG

For the last bookmark, we will make be making a Stain Glass Window bookmark!

IMG_2193.JPG

You will need the purple and green colored bookmarks.

IMG_2188.JPG

First, take the green bookmark and make a triangle pattern so that each triangle in laying next to eachother. Every other triangle should be facing up and every other facing down.

IMG_2190.JPG

Next cut the triangles out of the paper, here is one side,

IMG_2191.JPG

here is it fully cut out,

IMG_2192.JPG

Then tape that to the purple bookmark, and you are done!

IMG_2193.JPG

Now you have 3 BEAUTIFUL bookmarks!

IMG_2194.JPG

I hope you guys enjoyed these bookmarks! I spent a ton of time getting this together, so I hope you liked it!

If you make any of these bookmarks, please use the hashtag #readingreadingreadingholidays!

Holiday Reading: Quick Thought #3: What books should I get for picky readers?

Hi Everyone!

Today I will be doing my third quick thought! This one relates to the holidays, when buying books for picky readers!

For any age group, you’ll want to pick a book that is popular for picky readers. This way, they will have people to talk with and hype up the book for them!

I would also get books based on what type of shows/movies they watch! If they like shows about mystery’s, then buy them a mystery type book!

Also make sure that they are age appropriate! Sometimes, a child will not like to read simply because the books they are reading now are to hard or to simple/easy.

Those are all of my tips for buying books for picky readers of ANY age!

OK, so, where do I begin.

I just saw this trailer about in hour ago, and now I believe that I can put my thoughts into words.

First off, I LOVE this trailer! It’s action packed and shows that an AWESOME movie is upon us! I love “Tris’s” short hair! I think it blends into the story very well!

I also love the intense music in the background, especially the part where Caleb talks at the beginning.

Watching this trailer really makes me want to re-read Insurgent!

NaNoWriMo 2014: Chapter 5

Today I chose to walk home instead of taking the bus. “Why are we walking today? I’m so hungry!” wined David. “I think it would be better to get some fresh air, before we hear what’s going on at home.” I say. “Why? What’s going on?” Sometimes I forget that David’s only 4, and does not know the current events.
“Nothing, just the usual.” I reply calmly, so David does not make any more speculations. As we are walking, I remember that there is a bakery down the street that’s good, and lucky for me, cheap. “Hey, want to go to the Bakery down the street?” I ask David. More time spent away from home. “YES!” screams and shrieks David. At least someone is happy.
While walking I spot a police car very close to the bakery. “This doesn’t look good.” David whispers. I grasp on to his hand, and slowly we walk close to the bakery.
“What’s going on?” I ask the police officer. “This was the last place Smool went before getting sick, in hospital. If you’re planning on getting in, make your way home.” We do as we are asked. “Maybe tomorrow we can make cookies at home.” I tell David. “Okay.” David replies, unenthusiastically.
I wish there was one place where I could go to avoid going home.
