Holiday BookTubeAThon 2016 Day One

Hi friends!

I totally forgot to mention this before, but I am currently participating in the 2016 Holiday Booktubeathon! This will be my fourth Holiday Booktubeathon I will be partaking in, which is so awesome (the booktubeathon twitter even called me a veteran)!

I don’t really have a designated “To-Read” list, therefore I will be picking and choosing the books I want to read as I please.

As I have always done, I will be doing daily updates since the Holiday Booktubeathon is only three days (29-31). Now into today’s update!

Day One of the Holiday Booktubeathon was probably the most successful reading day I have ever had!

In the morning, I purchased a new ebook on my Kobo e-reader called “If I Was Your Girl” by Meredith Russo. The book was amazing, and a story I think everyone should read. I gave it a 5/5 stars and I plan on making a full book review for it in the future.

I then read 100 pages of an ARC I received from Raincoast Canada. It is a contemporary/LGBTQ+ novel called “Jess, Chunk and the Road Trip to Infinity”. So far it is excellent, and I am looking forward to finishing it immensely! Once it is finished, a review will be put in January.

Page Count: 388

Check back tomorrow for my day two update!

Blogger Recognition Award

Hi everyone!

A while back I was nominated by Kayla @ Kdrewthebookworm for the Blogger Recognition Award! Everyone should go check out her blog because it is awesome and she reads very similar books that I do!

For the blogger recognition award, you are supposed to show the award, thank the blogger who nominated me and share the story of how my blog was made. Also, I am supposed to give two tips to bloggers that are just starting out and nominate 15 bloggers below.

I am sure I have shared this story before, but if not… enjoy! I started blogging in December 2013. I had a “beauty” blog for (literally) a day before deleting it and creating Reading, Reading, Reading. I had been really into reading at this time and had followed a few book blogs for a while now. Book-Tube was just starting to become the popular thing that it is today. I started this blog to share my love of reading to everyone else, and I think 3 years later I have accomplished just that!

  1. One of my biggest most important tips to new bloggers would be to have a page that features a contact form or email address you use actively. When I was reaching out to bloggers for my collab blog “The Bookish People”, I was trying to contact bloggers that I thought would be good to write on it, but for several bloggers I could not find a contact form or email. If an author likes your blog and wants to send you a book, they will need your email or contact info, too! Make sure you always have a Contact Me page even when you are just starting out, you can check out mine here.
  2. When you are creating your blog, make sure to make social media accounts that correspond with your blog. This will contract a lot more readers that normally wouldn’t follow blogs, or a blog like yours. When I was starting out, I made an Instagram, Twitter and Facebook page all associated with my blog. I would definitely recommend the same to you! I actually have a page featuring all of my social media accounts that go along with Reading, Reading, Reading and you can check out that page here.

I am always terrible at choosing blogs to nominate, so if you see this please feel free to share this post and say that I tag you when I do it!

Thanks for reading this post, I hope you enjoyed it. Don’t forget to follow me on twitter for all Reading, Reading, Reading updates!

Alyssa’s Reviews – Room by Emma Donoghue

Hi everyone and welcome to a late night edition of Reading, Reading, Reading!

I took a week off of my Holiday Reading posts because I had a handful of projects and tests that I did last week, so I figured I would take the week off and relax! Going forward, I will not be posting everyday for the rest of the month, but this week I will be coming out with three posts (including this one) to share with you all!

This evening I have for you a book review of a book I just recently finished. I actually had to read this novel for an independent study unit in my english course. I really enjoyed it, so I thought I would provide a small review of it for all of you!

Synopsis:

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it’s where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.
Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it’s not enough…not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son’s bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.
Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

Review:

This book was absolutely brilliant. I had never read anything like this novel, and it was quite eye opening. To have the perspective come from a 5 year old boy who is very naive and doesn’t really know what is going on is very different to any other books made today. I also had never read any novels in which a large theme of it was related to rape and kidnapping. That was definitely the eye opening part. It definitely did not make me afraid for my life, so please do not let that discourage you from reading it.

The characters of Ma and Jack were absolutely lovely. Ma has raised Jack very well for being under such insane circumstances, especially with her background story while living in the house (no spoilers, but it is sad and crazy). Jack is a loveable young boy who is very creative in the way he talks and thinks. If you really process it, you will see that he actually acts very mature for his age, especially being raised under such horrible circumstances. I guess he didn’t know anything other than being inside the room and that is why he acted that way.

The ending of the book was very fast paced and intense. Just when you think everything  is heading to a happy ending, something almost tragic happens and scares the s*** out of you. I was reading this book in my school’s library and I literally couldn’t hear anything going on around me because I was that locked into the book.

Overall, I give this book 5/5 stars. It was so unique and beautifully written, and I truly don’t think I will read another that novel that comes close to this one.

Alyssa Searches Search Terms #3

Hi everyone!

A while back I started writing posts for a series called “Alyssa Searches Search Terms” and I thought it would be fun to continue on the trend!

Alyssa Searches Search Terms is a series where I will be going through my search terms (6 per post) used on my blog, and be reacting/responding to them. For a few, I may answer them correctly but for the others I will be kind of “sassy”. The search terms are not modified and are exactly as searched in the search box. This should be fun! Let’s get started!

Alyssa’s Reviews – Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Hi everyone!

Today I am going to be sharing with you my thoughts and opinions on the novel “Everything, Everything” by Nicola Yoon. I had been meaning to read this novel forever ago, but didn’t have the time to. When I saw that this novel was only $2.99 on the Kobo bookstore, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to buy it and read it on my e-reader. And that is exactly what I did!

Synopsis (Goodreads):

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Review:

This book was excellent, and by far one of the best books I have read this year. From the beginning I was hooked on the story, and it only took me about two days to read it. Do any of you find that when you are reading a book on an e-reader/iPad, you tend to read the book a lot faster than you would if it was on paper?

Both of the main characters in this novel – Madeline and Olly – were very loveable and kind. You could tell that Olly genuinely cared for Madeline and that was wonderful to see, especially in YA romance/contemporary. I also loved Madeline’s caregiver/nurse, and I thought that she added another “mother-like” figure to the novel. Of course, Olly’s father had me nervous from the start, but if you read the novel you will see what happens to him! Madeline’s mother is a completely different story though. I really did thank that she was nice and a great mother to her, but at the end we find out who she really was.

Speaking of the ending… OH BOY THAT ENDING! I definitely did not see that coming, and I don’t think many readers (who didn’t get spoiled!) expected that either. What a turn of events!

Overall, I loved this book and gave it 5/5 stars.

I hope you all enjoyed my review of Everything, Everything. If you have read this book, let me know your thoughts on it in the comments below. If you have read any books similar to this one that you think I might enjoy, feel free to comment those below, too!

Christmas Song Book Tag!

Hello everyone!

In the spirits of the holidays being right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to participate in the Christmas Song book tag! Although Christmas is still a few weeks away, I wanted to do this post now so that everyone can get excited about the holidays coming up. I know that not everyone celebrates Christmas, I to do not, but I still wanted to participate in the fun!

1. “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”: Name a villainous character you couldn’t help but love.

Dorothy from the Dorothy Must Die series is quite the villain, if I do say so myself! From an amazing back story, to the evil creature she seems to have become, she proves herself to be one of my favourite villains. Although, I have read many books, and I have read about some other great villains previously, too!

2. “All I Want for Christmas is You”: Which book to you most hope to see under your Christmas tree?

Although I don’t have a tree, I do hope to buy myself “The Sun is Also a Star” by Nicole Yoon. I just recently read her debut novel “Everything, Everything” (a review shall be going up shortly) and absolutely loved it, so I know I need to get my hands on this one very soon!

3. “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”: Name a character that overcomes major obstacles and learns to believe in themselves.

I am currently reading the “Room” by Emma Donaghue for a school project, and I think Ma, Jack’s mom, overcomes some great obstacles and learns how to live with those obstacles.

4. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”: a) Which character do you think would be on the top of the naughty list?
b) Which character do you think would be at the top of the nice list?

I think that Alex, from The Land of Stories, would be on the top of the nice list because she is so nice and caring. On the other hand, I think that Connor from TLOS would be on the top of the naughty list because he is always up to something!

5. “Frosty the Snowman”: Which book just melts your heart.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a book that melts your heart. I absolutely devoured this book and read it in one sitting on a sick day during winter break. You can read my book review here.

6. “Feliz Navidad”: Choose a book that takes place in a country other than your own.

Living in Canada, there are quite a few books who take place out of my country. One of my favourite books is Anna and the French Kiss, and that is based in Europe! You can read my review here.

7. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”: Which holiday themed book do you use to spread the Christmas joy?

You can read all about my favourite winter reads here!

8. “Sleigh Ride”: Which fictional character would you choose to spend the holidays with (doesn’t have to be a love interest!)

The fictional character I would love to spend the holidays with is Froggy from The Land of Stories. He is such an old and wise soul, and I feel like holidays with him would be so fun!

9. “Baby it’s Cold Outside”: Which book that you didn’t like would you sacrifice to a fire to warm yourself up in the cold?

The book I would DEFINITELY sacrifice is Kissing in America. I received a copy of this book from a publishing house, and I didn’t enjoy it.

10. “Do you hear what I hear”: Which book do you think everyone should read?

I was actually just talking about this with a few friends in my english class this morning! A book that I think everyone should read is “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini. It has such a memorable message, and I love it so much!

That is my version of the Christmas Song book tag! I tag anyone who wants to join in on the fun!

Two Holiday/Winter Book Recommendations

Hi everybody!

For the past two years of making my Holiday Reading Series, I have never made a winter book recommendation post (or at least not one that I could fine). This is very surprising to me! Below, I have some book recommendations for some awesome winter books!

20309175

My True Love Gave To Me is such a cool holiday book to read during the holiday time/winter break. Each author listed above wrote a story for the book! I actually wrote a book review for this book, and you can click here to see it!

81pqonpy7jl

This is another book that has 3 different authors, and all of the stories some how relate to one another. It has a “holiday” feeling to it, and I recommend it to all! I wrote a review for this book as well, and you can click here to read it!

Those were my two favourite holiday books, and I read them both every year during winter break!

Let me know some of your winter/holiday book recommendations below!

Holiday Colouring Book Review!

Hello friends!

Last year, I received an advanced copy of an adult colouring book for the holidays called “Keep Merry and Color On”! Needless to say, it was super cool, but I wanted to wait until I completed most of it to post my full review. So, that’s what I am going to do today!

Some pages I coloured:

fullsizerender-4img_0010img_0011img_0013img_3559img_3563img_3562img_3561img_3560

I had so much fun colouring in all of these festive pages. It puts you into the mood and spirit of the holiday times! Sometimes my Mom would also join me in colouring! It was very simple to colour in this book with others as the pages are ready to rip out neatly. Some of the pages took longer to colour and were more complicated, while others were easier and more simple. Every page was black and white, leaving the colour ways and creativity to you. While some pages were mostly christmas themed, others were more geared towards general winter and holiday times. Overall, I would recommend this book to everyone in the mood for some fun holiday times, and I think it would also be a great stocking stuffer!

I hope you all enjoyed a different type of book review! Thanks to Raincoast Canada for sending along this cool book! You can pick up your own copy of “Keep Merry and Color On” here!

December 2016 TBR!

Hi everyone!

To kick start my Holiday Reading 2016 series, I will be sharing with you my December to be read pile! Since I have barely read anything this whole year, I have only decided to chose three books, but they all sound great.

9781250088956

A few months ago I received this book from a publisher, so I plan on reading it this month! It is a shorter novel, therefore I can read it as soon as possible.

I bought this book many months ago, but I never ended up reading it. It sounds SO good! You can read the synopsis here. I can’t wait to start this book.

I received this book from Raincoast Canada, and I requested it because it sounded different than anything I had ever read.

BONUS:

It is currently November 28, and I am currently reading this novel. I will be finishing it within December, so technically I will be reading this before the books listed above.
