February Flurries: Quick Thought #8: ARCs/Review Books

UPDATED ON NOVEMBER 13, 2018.

Hi everyone,

Today, I’m going to discussing ARCs/Review Books, which I get FAQs about.

What is an ARC or Review Book?

An ARC is an Advanced Reading Copy of a book that is given to bloggers/reviewers/youtubers to read, review and publicize, even before it comes out! A great marketing strategy if you ask me!

How do I qualify to read an ARC?

Most of the time, you should be somebody considered as “press”. Basically, that means that you publicize books regularly, and specifically online. Although, some companies enjoy having everyday readers review books, not knowing the hype that surrounds them.

Who do I contact?

On most publishers sites, they will have a contact me page, and they provide email addresses for book reviewers. Most will get back to you within a couple of days. Normally, people would supply contact info here, but since I live in Canada, it won’t be the same for the rest of you. If you are canadian and interested in contact info for different publishers, please email me at alyssacohen@readingreadingreading.com.

Tips for Reading/Reviewing ARCs

  • Try to review the book around the time it comes out, I usually aim to post my review on its release day. Anytime during the publication month would be fine in general, I believe.
  • If you don’t read books you are sent, publishers won’t want to send them to you!
  • Remember, these are NOT free books. Publishing houses pay money to print and ship them, and it is your job to read and review them. Blogging is getting PAID in books, always remember that!
  • DO NOT take EVERY book you are offered, unless you know that you will read them/have an interest in them! (Trust me on this one… I learned the hard way!)
  • Create a review policy page (like I have here), so that publishing houses know what you are interested in reading and reviewing.
  • When you are finished reading the book and have posted your review, send a link to the publishing house/publicist that sent it to you. They will appreciate it, and most will repost it on Twitter for more readers to read!

I hope that you enjoyed this quick thought of ARC’s/Review Books!

See you guys tomorrow!

February Flurries: Quick Thought #7: How to LOVE Reading!

Hey guys!

A lot of my friends (who aren’t into reading) always ask me “Alyssa, how do you even LIKE to read? I HATE READING!!!!”

First off all, NO ONE can HATE reading, its (quite frankly) impossible! Reading is everywhere and anything that has words. In fact, you’re READING THIS right now! People may hate reading novels/books and that’s normal!

Many people say “Reading is just not my thing!” But, I say NO to that! Here are some steps on how to LOVE reading!

  • Experiment with different genres!

Many people are not reading things that they enjoy! In January, I experimented with some Non-Fiction books, and I’m definitely going to go back to that genre of reading! Just like many people say, you don’t know until you try!

  • Get Book Recommendations from People who are similar to YOU!

If you know me in real life, you know that I don’t like being compared (unless it’s to my dad :)) and that I think that everyone is there self! But, on this note, I will make some exceptions! People who are similar to you on likes or dislikes, may have read books that you may like! Don’t be afraid to ask!

  • Surround yourself with people who LOVE books!

I believe in the quote that states:

and I REALLY believe that this is true! If you surround yourself with people who love books, then you will LOVE them to!

  • Go on Social Media, YouTube, or Book Blogs!

Similar to my last point, if you go on any social media outlet, there are always people who talk about books! You are sure to find one that your interested in!

  • Pick HYPED UP Books!

There are always “hyped up” books, and most of the hype is there for a good reason! People love certain books because they are worth reading! Go ahead, and picked up a more hyped up book!

Those are all of my tips on how to LOVE reading! While writing this post, it made me think of really fun post ideas for the future, so get EXCITED!

February Flurries: Quick Thought #6: Balancing a Social Life while Running a Blog, Reading and School

Hi everyone,

Today, I decided to do a quick thoughts, as I know a lot of you guys enjoy it! I thought of doing a q+a, but then realized that I should do a whole blog post about this question. A LOT of my friends especially will ask me “How do you balance a social life while; blogging, reading and doing school work?”

To be COMPLETELY honest, I don’t think I’m the best person to answer this question. I don’t really have a HUGE social life, but it’s not like it’s nonexistent.

I try to schedule my posts AS MUCH as I possibly can! Although, I have been really sick this week, and this post is going live in approximately 5 hours… Click here to learn more about scheduling posts:  https://readingreadingalldaylong.wordpress.com/2015/01/07/creating-a-blog-scheduling-postscontent/.

I also try to measure out my time between reading, school and hanging out with friends. Basically, I try to make a schedule in my Kate Spade Agenda! I’m IN LOVE with it! If you guys would like me to do a blog post about it, I GLADLY will! Here’s a sneak peek:

Isn’t it GORGEOUS?!

Anyways, I like to use different colours to coordinate different things. Pink is My Blog, Blue is School, Orange is Appointments/Birthdays, and Green is Other.

I like to put EVERYTHING in it! I even like to put in emails I need to respond to, when I will schedule posts and things like that.

I hope that this helped EVERY type of blogger!

Holiday Reading: Quick Thought #4: How do I make time to read during the holidays/winter break?

Hey guys!

Today I’m going to be doing my Quick Thought #4!

How do I make time to read during the holidays/winter break?

I love to make a TBR/Schedule of what I’m going to be reading right before Winter Break. I always have a few books/genres that I need to complete for school, so I base my TBR around that as well.

Another tip would be to go to the library as much as possible. I always love being in an atmosphere with books, so if you need to study, you can still pick up a book and start reading!

For students in Elementary or Middle School, try to pick 3 books and chose the chapters you will read each day, so you can finish your desired books!

Another idea would be to make goals/challenges that will make you read more. For me, whenever I make a goal I try my best to stick to it! That way I get whatever I need to get done, over with!

I hope you make some time to read during Winter Break!

Quick Thought 002: Can I still read YA, even if I’m not a teenager?

Today, I thought I would tackle the big reading question.

Can I still read YA, even if I’m not a teenager? ABSOLUTELY!

Although YA is somewhat read by Young Adults, books are for everyone! I still read a few middle grade books and I am a teen! Nobody will care. Some YA books have a deeper meaning then some adult books.

And if you really want me to say this, at least you are reading!

So my answer is YES.

Quick Thought #1: Introduction

Hey guys!

I have noticed that there have been several current events going on in the world, and I would love to share my thoughts and opinions with you. That is why I am creating a “Quick Thought” series on my blog!

I will try to post one quick thought every few weeks, and I would love some feedback on them!

Disclaimers:

If you thought on my blog all we would talk about is books, then your are wrong. Reading means several different things, like, reading an an article or even a blurb on the daily news!

When doing “Quick Thoughts” they will be my personal opinions and thoughts. You may disagree with me, but you should know that there is more then 1 side to every story!

I hope that you guys will find these interesting! I will also have a “page” on the search bar where you can access all of them!
