Zen’s Pick: My Name is Parvana by Deborah Ellis

Hi guys!

Welcome to Zen’s Pick! Every so often, my BFF Zen will write a book review for my blog!
Let’s start with today’s!

Book: My Name is Parvana
Author: Deborah Ellis
Genre: Realistic Fiction

Summary (Off of GoodReads.com):
On a military base in post-Taliban Afghanistan, American authorities have just imprisoned a teenaged girl found in a bombed-out school. The army major thinks she may be a terrorist working with the Taliban. The girl does not respond to questions in any language and remains silent, even when she is threatened, harassed and mistreated over several days. The only clue to her identity is a tattered shoulder bag containing papers that refer to people named Shauzia, Nooria, Leila, Asif, Hassan — and Parvana.

In this long-awaited sequel to The Breadwinner Trilogy, Parvana is now fifteen years old. As she waits for foreign military forces to determine her fate, she remembers the past four years of her life. Reunited with her mother and sisters, she has been living in a village where her mother has finally managed to open a school for girls. But even though the Taliban has been driven from the government, the country is still at war, and many continue to view the education and freedom of girls and women with suspicion and fear.

As her family settles into the routine of running the school, Parvana, a bit to her surprise, finds herself restless and bored. She even thinks of running away. But when local men threaten the school and her family, she must draw on every ounce of bravery and resilience she possesses to survive the disaster that kills her mother, destroys the school, and puts her own life in jeopardy.

A riveting page-turner, Deborah Ellis’s new novel is at once harrowing, inspiring and thought-provoking. And, yes, in the end, Parvana is reunited with her childhood friend, Shauzia.

Review:

Characters:

Parvana- Very strong girl, Holds up to expectations of Taliban, she’s getting help but refuses to take it (Stubborn)
Noria- Older Sister, deep down cares about Parvana
Maryam- Loves Parvana
Ali- Baby of the family
Hassan- Small Boy that Parvana found

Overall Rating:
4/5 Stars
It’s a very interesting novel, about what has happened in Afghanistan. It is also quite the page turner, believe me! Although, I didn’t like what happened to Afghanistan, and it worrys me that it may happen in North America. This book made me feel lucky to have what I have and to appreciate more of the things I get, as not everyone is so lucky/privileged. That would be the one thing I wish readers would take away/learn from this book.

Thanks so much to Zen for reviewing this book for us! We’ll see her very soon!

Holiday Reading: My Favourite Winter Beverage!

Hi guys!

Welcome back to my last post for my Holiday Reading Series! I hope you guys enjoyed it, as I put a lot of time and effort into it!

Today I’m going to be sharing with you my favourite warm, winter beverage! Although, this may not be reading related, I thought it would be super fun to show you!

My favourite winter beverage is HOT CHOCOLATE!

These are the mixes/powders I like to use:

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/892/61403187/files/2014/12/img_2328.jpg

I normally drink it out of the Starbucks mug that came with the packet of powder!

I normally put in about 3 tea spoons. So, about three of these:

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/892/61403187/files/2014/12/img_2417.jpg

I then add in boiled water and a few tea spoons of milk!
During the holidays, I like to mash up a peppermint candy cane and put the powder inside of the hot chocolate! This makes a nice rich and peppermint-y flavour!

That is how I make my Hot Chocolate!

NaNoWriMo 2014: Chapter 7

I have a feeling that today will be harder.
I wake up and my father is not there. He is at work 6:30am sharp. Like I said, it will take time to adjust. I still have about eighty three good years left. Not to worry, I reassure myself. Today, the morning news is good, filled with funny talk show hosts and segments, that aren’t so depressing. Today will be better, I reassure myself, again.
As I head downstairs, I wonder what my father is doing right now. Hopefully, he is doing well. Maybe he is blessing a new baby with a DDK that is average, not above or below.
My mother is making me my favourite breakfast; French toast. David is eating scrambled eggs, his favourite as well. “Good Morning Rachel.” My mother says. “Good Morning Mom.” I reply. She seems to be in a rather good mood. I knew things would be better today, I just knew it. “David told me that today you were going to makes cookies with him, after school. Is this true?” she asks. “Yes mom, we were going to go to the bakery down the street yesterday, but it was closed.” I tell her the truth. “Why didn’t you go?” she asks. I reply “It was allegedly told that this was the last place that Derek Smool ate at, before he got sick. It has been shut down, just for now I guess.” She doesn’t seemed surprise. She tells me that she heard it on the news last night. I wonder why she didn’t tell me?
After eating breakfast, I go upstairs and get ready. I listen to some music to get me in a better mood, like usual. Once I am done, I get my bag and get ready, but just before I walk out my mother calls me.
“Rachel, why didn’t you take the bus yesterday?” she says calmly. “I wanted to get some fresh air.” I lie. My mother senses that I am lying through my eyes but doesn’t bother to ask. “School is closed today; everyone was instructed to stay inside. They’re investigating.” Great. Just peachy great. I wanted to leave the house just one day and go to school, not having to worry about home, but of course school is cancelled today, of course. “Can I call Leah to come over?” I ask. Then I can have someone to talk to. “Sure. You can make cookies with her if you want.” Uh.
“Hey Leah, want to come over today?” I ask. “Uh, I wish. My grandfather’s sick. It’s only a year until his DDK, so we all knew it was coming soon.” Boo. I wish she could come over but I totally understand, I lost my grandfather the year of his DDK, it was hard for all of us. We expected it, but at the same time we didn’t. “Did he get eighty five?” I ask. “Yeah, I have to go, talk to you later.” She says “Bye, best wishes.” I add.

Holiday Reading: Christmas Cracker Book Tag!

Hey guys!

Today I’m going to be doing the Christmas Cracker Book Tag! I was not tagged by anyone (AGAIN…) but decided that it would be fun to do this!

2. Pick a book you’re likely to buy as a present.

Both of these books are PERFECT for the holidays!

3. Pick a festive themed book.

A book that you can curl up with the fireplace is the whole Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling!

Over the festive period I want to finish My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories and start Stolen Child by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch.

Definitely Night by Elie Wiesel. I had to read this for a Seventh Grade English class, but I enjoyed it immensely.

NaNoWriMo 2014: Chapter 6

We walk in the house in silence. The silence stays even after we walk in. My parents are sitting on the couch, staring at us. Gesturing, with their eyes, to sit down. We do.
“We have some news.” My father says. This can’t be good, I think. “You’re father has been recruited as a full time scientist. “YAY!” David yells. Maybe David is right, maybe this is a good thing. My father will bring in more money into our house and find out wonderful information. Maybe, he can help me find out the information about Derek Smool. “We should all be very proud. Your father will be home on weekends and at 8:00 at night on weekdays to see us.” My mother says with a shy smile, and teary eyes. I run to her and give her a hug. I can see the sadness on her face. She must think of the positive outcomes for this to work. “Uncle Mark has also been recruited, he will be my assistant.” Uncle Mark is my father’s brother. He has two wonderful twin daughter who are only three years old. I wonder how he will be feeling. Leaving his wife and two toddlers must be troubling for him.
“Don’t be upset mom, at least he will be home during the night, and on Saturday and Sunday.” I say. “We will just need to adjust to the change. Don’t worry.” My mom looks at me. “I know sweety, thank you. You are right, as always.”
