Top 9 Books of 2019!

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

I cannot believe we are less than 24-hours away until the start of a new decade! While 2019 was truly a great year, I am really looking forward to 2020! 2020 will be a year of huge changes for me, and I hope to document and share them with you on this blog while they happen.

I read 59 books in 2019, and while that sounds like a good number, I have barely read any books over the past three or so months. If I was more consistent, I probably would have reached the 75 book mark. However, my goal was to read 40 books, and I surpassed that goal by quite a bit! This list was slightly difficult to put together, but only because there weren’t any books that I was totally 10000% in love with last year. None of these books top my number one favourite book of last year, which I think is notable. Nevertheless, I loved the books I have on my top list this year, and hope you enjoyed them if you read them as well!

Reflecting on 2019 Bookish Goals

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

During January 2019, I wrote and shared a blog post talking about my top bookish goals for 2019! Today, I am going to be reacting and reflecting to them, and letting you know if I completed the goal or not! To view the original post, click here.

GOAL #1: Goodreads Reading Challenge: 40 Books

I COMPLETED THIS GOAL! I read 59/40 books this year, which is the most amount of books I have ever read in one year! As you will read in my Top 9 Books of 2019 post that will be out on Tuesday, I actually could have read quite a few more books than 59, although I have been quite busy lately. I am so proud of reaching my Goodreads goal this year, and hope to do so again in 2020!

GOAL #2: Read More Diverse Books

After reviewing all of the books I read on Goodreads, I am going to say that I completed this goal as well! I read quite a few books that had several diverse themes or were written by a diverse group of people.

GOAL #3: Variety of Genres

Unfortunately, I do not think I achieved this goal. Most of the books I read were either Mystery/Thriller novels or Contemporaries, which is what I usually have been reading over the past few years.

GOAL #4: Be More Selective with ARCs

Like the previous goal, I don’t think I completed this one either. I received A TON of ARCs this year, and about 40% of them I have yet to read. I will definitely be carrying this goal into 2020!

GOAL #5: Purchase Less Books

I definitely think I completed this one! This year, I learned to utilize and love my local library, and I think I only made one book outlet purchase this year! I can’t even remember the last time I bought a book for myself, which is crazy!

GOAL #6: Read More eBooks

Even though I believe I read more eBooks this year than I did last year, I still didn’t read that many, and will not be giving my self a stamp of completion for this goal!

GOAL #7: Participate in 5 Readathons

Unfortunately, I didn’t make enough time to participate in many readathons this year, and will be carrying this goal into 2020!

GOAL #8: Use Bookstagram

I 100% completed this goal this year! I accumulated over 1000 Bookstagram followers this year, and am looking forward to posting more frequently next year!

GOAL #9: Create a Book Club

I completed this goal as well! I created a book club at my school this year, although we haven’t had our second meeting yet…

GOAL #10: Read Harry Potter

Unfortunately, the goal I wanted to complete the most wasn’t even started this year! I own the entire Harry Potter series, but have yet to get past the second book. I am determined to complete this goal over the upcoming decade, and we shall see if I can complete the series sooner than later!

Those are all of the goals I set for myself for the year 2019, and I completed exactly half of them, which isn’t too great. I hope to stick to my goals even better in 2020, and I will be sharing my full goal list with you in just a few days! Did you set any bookish goals for yourself? If so, did you stick with them? Let me know in the comments!

End of Year Book Tag! 2019 Edition

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

In Canada, Christmas decorations are already lining Chapters Indigo, Walmart, and Costco, which can only mean one thing… it is almost the end of 2019! With the end of the year comes the time where you evaluate all of the reading you have done so far this year, and see exactly how far you are from your Goodreads goal among other things!

I saw this End of Year Book Tag floating around on BookTube, but I haven’t seen many of these posts on book blogs yet!

  1. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
  2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
  3. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
  4. What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
  5. Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?
  6. Have you already started making reading plans for 2020?

Alyssa’s Reviews – Dear Wife by Kimberly Belle

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

I have been on a HUGE Mystery/Thriller kick recently, and I hope you are ready for all of the crazy, thrilling reviews (see what I did there?)! A while ago, I posted an Indigo book haul, where I purchased a copy of DEAR WIFE by Kimberly Belle. It had been sitting on my shelves ever since I posted that haul, but a couple of weeks ago I decided to read pick it up and read the first few chapters. Instead of reading a couple of chapters, I devoured it in just over a day!

Synopsis (Goodreads.com):

From the bestselling author of The Marriage Lie and Three Days Missing comes a riveting new novel of suspense about a woman who, in a fight for survival, must decide just how far she’ll go to escape the person she once loved.
Beth Murphy is on the run…
For nearly a year, Beth has been planning for this day. A day some people might call any other Wednesday, but Beth prefers to see it as her new beginning–one with a new look, new name and new city. Beth has given her plan significant thought, because one small slip and her violent husband will find her.
Sabine Hardison is missing…
A couple hundred miles away, Jeffrey returns home from a work trip to find his wife, Sabine, is missing. Wherever she is, she’s taken almost nothing with her. Her abandoned car is the only evidence the police have, and all signs point to foul play.
As the police search for leads, the case becomes more and more convoluted. Sabine’s carefully laid plans for her future indicate trouble at home, and a husband who would be better off with her gone. The detective on the case will stop at nothing to find out what happened and bring this missing woman home. Where is Sabine? And who is Beth? The only thing that’s certain is that someone is lying and the truth won’t stay buried for long.

This book was so insanely, unbelievable, GREAT. Honestly, it is one of the best thrillers I have ever read, and will certainly be in my Top 10 books of 2019. As I wrote in my Goodreads review at midnight over a week ago, “This is EVERYTHING I love in a thriller all (w)rapped into one book! Domestic suspense, accused husband, detective that’s a main focus in the story, a small but mighty cast of characters and a SHOCKING plot twist at the end!”

The characters in this book are so well-written and developed. They all had really interesting and intriguing back stories, which contributed to their well written stories. My favourite character by far was Marcus. I usually don’t enjoy reading from the perspective of a detective, but there was something about his character that was really interesting to me.

I absolutely adored the writing in this novel. The novel is written in three perspectives, but Beth’s perspective is written in second-person narrative, but Jefferey and Marcus’s perspectives were both written in first-person perspective. The difference in narrative writing styles was minimal but still very impactful. It wasn’t confusing at all, and it made it easier to understand which perspective I was reading from.

This book will keep you guessing at every moment. You never really know who is who, who is really a good person, and who is telling the truth. The plot twist in this novel was INSANE, and while I predicted it just a few pages before it was revealed, I thought it was SO smart, and not something I would have guessed at the beginning of the novel.

Overall, I absolutely loved this thriller and rated it 5/5 stars. If you enjoy crazy domestic thrillers, I highly recommend this one!

TeensRead Winter & Spring 2020 Preview Recap

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

A couple of weeks ago, I attended the Raincoast Teens Read Winter & Spring 2020 Preview via their wonderful livestream! While I live semi-close to the event space this host this event in Toronto, I love the option to watch this one in my house on my own time. For the past few events I attended virtually, they have been so gracious enough to send me a swag bag, so I will be sharing with you the contents of my bag, as well as the books I am looking forward to the most out of all of their new upcoming releases!

The picture above is a collage featuring the releases the Raincoast crew talked about that I’m the most excited for! If you are intrigued by a title or cover you see here, search the title and author up on Goodreads.

img_4875

The swag bag itself was encompassed of the beautiful THE HAZEL WOOD by Melissa Albert cover!

img_4874

These were the main “fun” contents! It came with a booklet that shared the synopsis and information of all of the books they featured at the event. It also included a bookmark, fun hogwarts card, two trading cards, tattoos, a button, and a sampler of Rebel by Marie Lu!

img_4878

The first book I spotted in my swag bag was DIAMOND CITY by Francesca Flores. This one sounds really interesting, and I was really excited to see this one in my bag! This one is expected to be released on January 28, 2020.

img_4880

The second book in my swag bag was WICKED AS YOU WISH by Rin Chupeco. This one sounds super intriguing, and sounds like a fantasy book that I will actually enjoy! This one will be coming out on March 3, 2020.

img_4883

The last book in my swag bag is THE SILVERED SERPENTS by Roshani Chokshi. Truth be told, I don’t have any interest in reading GILDED WOLVES, the first novel in this series, so I plan on giving this one away on my Instagram in February!

Alyssa’s Reviews – The How and The Why by Cynthia Hand (ARC)

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

When I first heard that Cynthia Hand was publishing a new book, I immediatley knew I wanted to get my hands on it. Cynthia’s 2017 release THE AFTERLIFE OF HOLLY CHASE was my second favourite books of 2018! Even though her new 2019 release, THE HOW AND THE WHY, is a very different book, I was still so excited to get my hands on it! Fortunately, I got my hands on an ARC of it at the HCC Frenzy Presents event I attended in August!

img_4217

Synopsis (Goodreads.com):

A poignant exploration of family and the ties that bind, perfect for fans of Far From the Tree, from New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand.
Today Melly had us writing letters to our babies…
Cassandra McMurtrey has the best parents a girl could ask for. They’ve given Cass a life she wouldn’t trade for the world. She has everything she needs—except maybe the one thing she wants. Like, to know who she is. Where she came from. Questions her adoptive parents can’t answer, no matter how much they love her.
But eighteen years ago, someone wrote Cass a series of letters. And they may just hold the answers Cass has been searching for.
Alternating between Cass’s search for answers and letters from the pregnant teen who gave her up for adoption, this voice-driven narrative is the perfect read for fans of Nina LaCour and Jandy Nelson.

WOW. This book was breathtaking.

The characters in this novel were so well developed and crafted. I felt that I knew each character so well, and they all seemed very real to me. Cass’s closeness to her parents and overall value/importance of family was one of my favourite parts of the story. You could tell that she cared so much for them and loved them with all her heart.

The writing in this book was so effortless but meaningful. This book had some of the most beautiful ending chapter quotes I have ever read, and I truly loved some of the messages that were written in them. One of my favourite aspects of this novel was the flash backs that were written as letters from Cassandra’s biological mother. They gave us an insight to her biological mother’s life, while also sharing her hopes and aspirations for her future daughter, even though she was giving her up for adoption. These letters were so touching and beautiful, and often resulted in multiple tears being shed!

The overall story was so fantastic! It flowed at a perfect pace, and did not include any scenes that weren’t important to the story.

Overall, I loved this book and gave it 5/5 stars! Thanks again to HCC Frenzy for the ARC!

September & October 2019 Wrap-Up

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

Believe it or not, every post you have read on this blog during the months of September and October have been pre-scheduled and were written in August! I knew I would be hit with a ton of work during the beginning of September, but I have been absolutely SWAMPED. For those of you who don’t know, I am currently in my senior year of high school, and it has been no joke. I thought that I would have quite a bit more time for reading and blogging, but between constant due dates, daily homework, and time for university research, I have had practically zero time to do anything in the book-universe. However, this week I don’t have much to do, so I am going to be pre-scheduling and writing a ton of blog posts for the next few weeks! And yes, this means that new Instagram posts and blog posts will be up frequently – sorry for leaving you in the dark for a few weeks!

You may have noticed that I did not post a September Wrap-Up last month, and that is because I really haven’t read that much. However, I still wanted to write a short wrap up to share the few books that I have read over the past two months, as they have ALL been 5-stars!

img_4217

The first book I read in September was THE HOW AND THE WHY by Cynthia Hand. I don’t want to spoil anything in this book, but I will tell you that it was PHENOMENAL. A full review will be coming your way very soon! Thanks to HCC Frenzy for the ARC that I received in my swag bag at Frenzy Presents a few months ago!

img_3801

The second (and last) book I read in September was FULL DISCLOSURE by Camryn Garrett. Just like the previous book, I absolutely adored this one. From the characters to the writing style, I enjoyed every single second that I was reading it. You can read my full review here. Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC!

43212740

The first book I read in October was THE NEWISH JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA by Stephanie Butnick, Lies Leibovitz, and Mark Oppenheimer. I am a huge fan of their podcast ‘UnOrthodox’, and when I found out that they were creating a “Jewish encyclopedia” of sorts, I knew I needed to get my hands on it. I decided to purchase the ebook as the physical copy was over $50, but I’m still super happy that I read and loved it!

43822605

The last book I read over this four month period was 24/6 THE POWER OF UNPLUGGING ONE DAY A WEEK by Tiffany Shlain. I was SO happy when I found out that I was approved for this book on Netgalley just days before its official release, as I knew I couldn’t help but buy it if I didn’t have the eARC! This book was everything I wanted and more. It was so powerful and inspirational, but also humours at times. I loved the personal stories as well as the strong messages and themes. I was not planning on posting a full review for this book, but if you want one, let me know in the comments! Thanks to Netgalley for approving me for an eARC of this book!

Those are all of the books I read in September and October. A (very) short, yet sweet list! Thanks for all of the support over these past two months even though I have barely been posting anything, new content is on the way very soon!

Alyssa’s Reviews – Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett (ARC)

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

Last month I had the pleasure of reading FULL DISCLOSURE by Camryn Garrett (courtesy of an ARC provided by Penguin Teen Canada). This book blew away my initial expectations, and I am so excited to share my full review with you!

img_3801

Synopsis (Goodreads.com):

In a community that isn’t always understanding, an HIV-positive teen must navigate fear, disclosure, and radical self-acceptance when she falls in love–and lust–for the first time. Powerful and uplifting, Full Disclosure will speak to fans of Angie Thomas and Nicola Yoon.
Simone Garcia-Hampton is starting over at a new school, and this time things will be different. She’s making real friends, making a name for herself as student director of Rent, and making a play for Miles, the guy who makes her melt every time he walks into a room. The last thing she wants is for word to get out that she’s HIV-positive, because last time . . . well, last time things got ugly.
Keeping her viral load under control is easy, but keeping her diagnosis under wraps is not so simple. As Simone and Miles start going out for real–shy kisses escalating into much more–she feels an uneasiness that goes beyond butterflies. She knows she has to tell him that she’s positive, especially if sex is a possibility, but she’s terrified of how he’ll react! And then she finds an anonymous note in her locker: I know you have HIV. You have until Thanksgiving to stop hanging out with Miles. Or everyone else will know too.
Simone’s first instinct is to protect her secret at all costs, but as she gains a deeper understanding of the prejudice and fear in her community, she begins to wonder if the only way to rise above is to face the haters head-on…

As I shared above, this book obliterated my expectations. Everything about it was done perfectly and with purpose.

The characters in this book felt so real. While I didn’t personally connect with the main character, Simone, it was so interesting to read from a perspective of a girl that is HIV positive. The side characters were all so supportive of the main character, which was obviously so great to read about. I LOVED Miles (Simone’s love interest), as he treated her like any other girlfriend that he would have, regardless of her HIV. Simone has two fathers raising her, which was a fantastic addition to an already diverse novel.

Like I said in the previous paragraph, this book had a wide variety of representation. From Simone having two fathers, to a POC HIV-positive main character, there are a lot of things that YA readers will read in this novel that they may not have read before.

The overall plot was great. The story was very interesting and beautiful written. While I thought that some scenes in the story dragged on a little bit, I understand why they were written in. The overall flow of the book was great, too!

Possibly my favourite part of the book was the writing style. It went so perfectly with the overall importance of this story.

Overall, I absolutely loved FULL DISCLOSURE and rated it 5/5 stars! Thanks to Penguin Teen Canada for sending me the ARC! I highly encourage you all to pick up this book, especially since it comes out today!

Good Night Book Owls!

5-Star Predictions: Fall 2019

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

Over the past few seasons, I have created some 5-star predictions for books that are either releasing in that season or I am planning to read in that season. Last season, I didn’t read many of my 5-star predictions, therefore I didn’t make a reflection post like I did in the Spring. However, I still plan on reading this months’ 5-star predictions, and hopefully they will live up to my expectations!

fullsizeoutput_368a

The first book I predict will be a 5-star prediction is DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME by Mhairi McFarlane. I purchased this book a few months ago, since it was 40% off at Chapters Indigo a little while ago. While I haven’t heard many reviews of this book, the few thoughts I have heard have been excellent!

fullsizeoutput_3687

The second book I believe will be a 5-star prediction is AMERICAN ROYALS by Katharine McGee. This book sounds super sweet and unique, plus who wouldn’t want to read about a hypothetical royal family in America?! Thanks to Penguin Teen Canada for an ARC of this book!

fullsizeoutput_3683

The third book I believe will be 5-stars is THE BABYSITTERS COVEN by Kate Williams. This book sounds super interesting and unique, and when I initially heard about it, I thought I would love it! Hopefully it lives up to all of my hype! Thanks to Penguin Teen Canada for the ARC!

fullsizeoutput_368e

The fourth book I think will be 5-stars is SLAY by Brittney Morris. This book talks about a lot of important topics, from racism to females in technology. If you recognize this book, you’ve probably seen it from BookExpo/Book Con’s massive marketing campaign on it. I really hope I love this book! Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC!

fullsizeoutput_3688

The last book I believe will be 5-stars is THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alix E. Harrow. While I don’t usually read much adult fantasy, this one sounds very similar to TLOS (my FAVOURITE middle grade series!) as well as Seanan McGuire’s fantasy series (which I haven’t read, but plan to very soon).

fullsizeoutput_3686

Those are my Fall 2019 5-star predictions! Do you find any of these interesting? Let me know in the comments!

Good Night Book Owls!

September 2019 TBR

Welcome back to Reading, Reading, Reading!

I have SOOOOOOO many ARCs to read in September, and I hope to get to as many of them as I can! Any ARC that I don’t get to this month will be added to my October TBR, so if you don’t see a review of one of the books I feature in this TBR, it will be added to my review list for next month!

img_4223

The first book I plan on reading is DEAR HAITI, LOVE ALAINE by Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite. This book is part first-person, and part letter/mixed media. At the HCC Frenzy presents event, we saw a video recorded by the two authors of this novel talking about their book. They seemed like the sweetest people ever, and the video made me more excited to read the book! Thanks to HCC Frenzy for the ARC!

img_4224

The second book I plan to read this month is AMERICAN ROYALS by Katharine McGee. I don’t know much about this novel, other than the fact that it is about the (fictional) royal family of America. I have heard some great things about this novel, and am looking forward to reading it! Thanks to Penguin Teen Canada for the ARC!

img_4227

The third book I plan to read this month is FRANKLY IN LOVE by David Yoon. As I have shared before, David Yoon is popular YA author Nicola Yoon’s husband. It’s so cool that they are both YA contemporary writers, and they are a married couple! Thanks to Penguin Teen Canada for the ARC!

img_4234

I then plan to read THE BABYSITTERS COVEN by Kate Williams. I heard about this book at the very beginning of 2019, and have been anticipating it ever since! This book has been pitched as Adventures in Babysitting meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and if that doesn’t intrigue you, I don’t know what will?! Thanks to Penguin Teen Canada for the ARC!

img_4233

The next book I plan to read is THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alix E. Harrow. Even though I don’t usually read Adult fantasy novels, this one sounded super interesting and creative. Plus, how can you not be drawn to this gorgeous cover? Thanks to HBG Canada for the ARC!

img_4235

After those, I plan on reading CHARLIE THORNE AND THE LAST EQUATION by Stuart Gibbs. This one sounded like nothing I have ever read before, but definitely like something I will enjoy! Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC!

img_4237

The second-last book I hope to read this month is THE LIARS OF MARIPOSA ISLAND by Jennifer Mathieu. I read MOXIE earlier this year and loved it, and even though this one is very different than that, I still hope to enjoy it just as much! Thanks to Raincoast Books for the ARC!

img_4238

The last book I plan on reading this month is SLAY by Brittney Morris. This book was getting a lot go hype at BEA/BookCon this year, especially since it has such an interesting and unique premise. I cannot wait to read this and hope to get to it by the end of this month! Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC!

img_4240

Those are all of the books I plan to read this September! How many books are you planning on reading?
