Alyssa’s Reviews – In Real Life: My Journey to a Pixelated World by Joey Graceffa (ARC)

Hi everyone!

Today, I’m going to be writing a book review for Joey Graceffa’s debut memoir, In Real Life: My Journey to a Pixelated World.

Synopsis (taken from Simon and Schuster Canada):

A confessional, uplifting memoir from the beloved YouTube personality.
It’s not where you begin that matters.
It’s where you end up.
Twenty-three year old Joey Graceffa has captured the hearts of millions of teens and young adults through his playful, sweet, and inspirational YouTube presence (not to mention his sparkling eyes and perfect hair). Yet, Joey wasn’t always comfortable in his skin, and in this candid memoir, he thoughtfully looks back on his journey from pain to pride, self-doubt to self-acceptance.
To his fans, Joey is that best friend who always captures the brighter side of life but also isn’t afraid to get real. In the pages of his first book, he opens up about his years of struggling with family hardships and troubles at school, with cruel bullying and the sting of rejection. He tells of first loves and losses, embarrassing moments and surprising discoveries, loneliness, laughter, and life-changing forks in the road, showing us the incalculable value of finally finding and following your true passion in this world. Funny, warm-hearted, and inspiring, Joey Graceffa’s story is a welcome reminder that it’s not where you begin that matters, but where you end up.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I was not a huge Joey Graceffa youtube viewer, but I occasionally watched some of his videos, and the ones I watched I LOVED.

I remember back in April, I received in email from Simon and Schuster Canada, and it was right when I finished a Math Unit Exam, and I needed a “breather”. I went on my iPad and saw an email about review Joey Graceffas’ new book, and I was ecstatic. How many people can say that they received a copy of an infamous YouTubers’ book? Not many!

While reading this book, I was hooked from the moment it started. I found a video of Joey Graceffa and some of his youtube friends reading the prologue of the book, and I watched it the night that I accepted the review email. Before reviewing the book, I searched through his channel to find some popular videos, and I instantly fell in love with his charisma and personality (those traits showed throughout his book as well).

I ended up reading this book in less than 24 hours. Yes, it was that amazing!

I also found it very heartfelt when he was mentioning stories about his mother. Although I do not have a troubled childhood, I loved when Joey shared more of his life with us.

Also, if you have seen this video, then you will know about the HUGE surprise that he shared through his book and music video. Which for me wasn’t to shocking.

Overall, I highly enjoyed this book and would give it all of the stars in the world. But, since that is impossible, I gave it 5/5 stars!

I hope that you guys enjoyed this book review. Thank you to the crew at Simon and Schuster Canada for giving me wonderful opportunities like these, it inspires me more then you will ever know.

Alyssa’s Life: First Baseball Game

Hi everyone!

I’m going to start doing a few real life posts, and I thought that this would be a great way to start!

Today, I went to my hometeams’ baseball game: the Toronto Blue Jays!

We first went to Jack Astor’s for Lunch! I had the regular chicken fingers with the Yukon gold Fries! The meal was amazing!

We then went to the Newley renovated area outside of the Rogers centre. This holds souvenir shops, as well as the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium!

We then went to the apparel store. I bought a t-shirt and a zip up hoodie!

Finally, the game started!

We were sitting in the 500’s, but our seats were amazing!

We ended up getting a snack around the bottom of the fourth inning.

We stayed until the very end and we won 10-5!

I hope that you all enjoyed my first “Alyssa’s Life” post! Let me know in the comments if you would like to see one of these again!

Magnificent May: Quick Thought: My Views on Book Pirating

Hi everyone!

Today I’m going to be sharing with you my views on book pirating.

So, what exactly is book pirating?

To take (something) by piracy.

To make use of or reproduce (another’s work) without authorization.

Basically, it’s when somebody else thinks of an idea, and then you use it and receive all the credit for the book.

Like every other book blogger, I really do not like this idea. If you have an idea, use it yourself, don’t let others use it. I am one of the most empathetic people I know, and I feel that if I would do this, I would feel horrible for the other person. Although, knowing me I would never do it anyways.

Let me know in the comments below what your views are on book pirating. I would love to start a conversation!

My Cracking Spines “Issue”

Hi everyone!

Today I’m going to be talking to you about a bookish OCD issue… Cracking Spines!

A few months ago, I made a post about not really letting people borrow my personal books! One of the main reasons is the Cracking Spines thing!

I never realized how bad this issue was until last month when I started my Wreck This Journal! The very first activity page says to crack the spine… but I just COULDN’T do it! It’s like betraying a cult (aka this blog :)). I feel like as book bloggers, or readers of one, we all have the same cracking spines “issue”!

I hope that you guys enjoyed this post! Let me know if you want to here more about my OCD Bookish “issues”, and I will be sure to chat about some more!

Conversations That Bloggers May Have about Blogging to Non-Bloggers: Friends Edition

Hi everyone!

This post is going to be part of a new, very exciting and fun monthly blog feature! It will be entitled: Conversations That Bloggers May Have about Blogging to Non-Bloggers! I thought of this idea one day in school when a friend of mine was asking me about my blog! This first post will be friends edition, because I wrote down a few of the things this particular friend said, and trust me, a few points are hilarious!

“So how did you come up with this blog?”

Well, I thought of it when I first started reading book blogs.”

“Wait, there are more of you???”

“Uh yeah…”

So how much money are you getting paid exactly?”

“None. Although, I get paid in books from publishers!”

“What a rip off!”

“But, I’m only a young teenager, why do I need to be paid at this very moment?”

“Because then you will be rich *laughter*!”

“Yeah right!”

“Why do you feel the need to read books and then make other people read your posts?”

“Because, people who are REALLY interested in books don’t mind reading a bookish blog post.”

“And, how long have you been doing this again?”

For almost a year and a half!

“No way! You must not have commitment issues.”

“Haha yeah…”

I hope that you guys enjoyed the first installment to this monthly feature! Make sure to leave me a comment, letting me know if you want to see more of these!
